The gentle giants of
the forests would rule for centuries, then slowly falter and fragment, leaving snags to
house the birds and bats, and finally fall and enrich the forest floor.

And living together
with these towering trees were whole galaxies of smaller creatures.

There were young
trees vibrant with life, and baby pines planted by forgetful squirrels, wild strawberries,
and a whole melody of other plants and insects.

And the leaves and
cones and flowers fed the chipmunks and butterflies and rabbits..

and the forest was
home, as well, to a whole sky full of birds; stellar jays and tanagers, |

will eat out of your hand if you are still enough, and |
